As Google Panda Version 2.2 is being rolled out, it’s more important than ever to get to grips with what this is really all about. If you still think that Google Panda is an algorithm update, albeit one of pretty massive proportions, then you’re already on the wrong track. This isn’t about updating their algorithms, but adding in something entirely new – effectively a ranking mechanism which uses a concept quite different from anything Google’s focussed on before.
Until now most people have known that the most important things to focus on are keywords, title tags and links. But whilst those factors are still considered, there’s something new. It’s good news though, because it’s entirely within your control. It just needs effort.
The real difference being introduced with Google’s Panda update is that for the first time the behaviour of your visitors will directly influence Google’s opinion of your website, and ultimately your site’s ranking in the search results. Google will be looking at a whole range of factors, such as how long your visitors stay on your site, how many pages they visit, how many people click through to your site from the search results, how many people bounce straight off your site after visiting, and how many people use thing’s like Google’s ‘+1’ buttons and other social sharing facilities.
You can fool a computer if you put enough time, money and effort into it, but people are very hard to fool, and so with this new way of ranking sites it’s more important than ever to make sure your website is structured with unique, original and engaging content which will encourage your visitors to stay, to read, to browse and to share.
